China Proposes New Regulation on Labelling AI-Generated Content

Beijing: The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has released a draft regulation aimed at standardising the labelling of AI-generated synthetic content to protect national security and the public interest, as reported by Xinhua.

Titled Measures for Identifying AI-Generated Synthetic Content, this draft regulation is open for public feedback until October 14, 2024.

As defined by the proposed rules, AI-generated synthetic content includes any text, image, audio, or video produced using artificial intelligence technologies.

Under the draft regulation, internet information service providers must adhere to national standards for labelling such content. Providers that allow functionalities such as downloading, copying, or exporting AI-generated materials are required to embed explicit labels in the files.

Moreover, platforms that distribute content must regulate the dissemination of AI-generated materials by providing identification functions and prompting users to disclose whether their posts contain AI-generated content.
